Elections II
Still nothing much to report about the election results. The official result will be announced Nov. 19, but there should be preliminary annoucements at the end of this week. There have been some very few incidents in some other parts of the country but Kinshasa has been very quiet.
A UN guy I know said things as they are unfolding now are consistent with their most optimistic predictions. They couldn't be going any better. Their most pessimistic predictions included things like foreign armies and large numbers of tanks driving around Kinshasa.
So far, so good. Still, it helps to be prepared. The UK embassy is collecting food and tents so they can feed and house 350 people for 1 week. A number of the NGO's are sending most or all of their ex-pat staff out of the country for some days before and after the election results are announced. There have been many more EU helicopter patrols over Kin than we have seen before and both the EU and the UN are actually doing rehearsals throughout the city.
The American and the Canadian embassies are urging all to remain calm.

How were the recent U.S. election results viewed in your part of the DRC?
Did anyone there say much?
no, nobody but a few expats commented upon it. the people here are thinking about almost nothing other than the election for president of congo and the possibility of fighting here in Kinshasa.
