Rockets Rising
I spoke in the past of seeing big rockets rising far off in the night. Some of the other crews have seen the same thing on two different occasions. We figured they were GMLRS but didn't know for sure. It is important to us to be certain.
So in the pursuit of knowledge, one of the SGT.'s took me to see some people who told me to talk to some other people. I did so and found out those big rockets we saw were indeed GMLRS. There are batteries scattered throughout the country to support operations and they were about in the places where we saw the launches. When we see it again in the future, we will know what we are looking at.
This wasn't very hard for me to do, once I decided to do it. I decided to do it after asking out parent unit's S-2 (intel people) several times if they could confirm what those were. They said "we'll get on it" a few times before it was plain they wouldn't. They are normally pretty helpful, but if you ask a question outside their normal range, they aren't.
Here is a link for GMLRS info. It is a pretty cool weapon, especially the unitary warhead. Very precise, long range application of a thing that goes boom with less collateral damage.

it is amazing that such destructive power can come from something that looks to be no bigger than a small tank.
are these the same size as the normal MRLS rockets?
it is actually a fairly large vehicle. the unitary round is quite useful i have read. it is gps guided so it is accurate enough to hit a single house in a built up area. the warhead is big enough to take out the house but not so big as to take out surrounding structures. great to use if the enemy inside won't give up. you don't have to send soldiers in after them, just bring the roof down on their heads. everybody is happy.
i don't know if these rockets have a greater diameter than the normal mlrs rockets. i should look it up.
