Ever in High School
This being the modern American military, there are women on this big base, about 15% of the military and civilian personnel. In that respect it is far far better than isolated military bases in decades past; say a Pacific island base in WWII where girls were just fading memory. But it still is a bit odd.
Nobody on the base mixes much with people outside their own unit or group. You see a lot of people, mainly in the chow hall, but you know only a very few. So what results are conversations like this:
"You see her?"
"Of course I saw her!"
"Wooow."
"She's good lookin' but you should see that new Captain over at S-2, she's somethin' man."
"Didn't she just get here?"
"I think so, but the ones you should really see are the two blonde Air Force Captains who eat here sometimes."
"Aren't those two walking in now them?"
"Yea, that's them."
"Wooow."
Of course we don't know any of those people and probably will never talk to any of them, but the talk goes on. Just like in high school.

You realize these exact same conversations are happening in Colleges (students and teachers both participating), businesses, churches, libraries, gas stations, shopping malls, grade schools (students and teachers), elementary schools (students and teachers), neighborhoods, swimming pools etc., etc., etc. The only common element between all of them is - yup - men!
