Bob Feller died
Bob Feller, probably the greatest Indians pitcher of all time (look him up you lazy people), just died.
My Mom tells one of those fleeting brush with the famous stories about him. In the old days, before the war, WWII, the Indians used to have 1 or 2 good local high school players warm up with them before a game. My Uncle Bill got picked once. I've mentioned him before. And my Mom went down to League Park to watch.
Bill was a great hitter but a terrible fielder, so naturally he was in the outfield shagging fly balls. He was chasing one with the enthusiasm of a 17 year old playing with the big leaguers and didn't notice he was heading toward the outfield wall so Bob Feller yelled "Watch out Bill!" and my uncle didn't lose his teeth that day. A very short time later both Bob and Bill went to the war. Bill didn't get a good shot at the big leagues and Bob didn't win 300 in the majors.
That is a little story but I like it because it is one of those stories that ties families together. And it probably helped sell a few tickets to Indians games over the years.
