Mbuji-Mayi
I was in Mbuji-Mayi the other day paying my landing and route fees. On top of the desk of the woman who handled the transaction was a green lockable suitcase, Indian knockoff of American Tourister type. This was where all the monies and receipts were kept. She unlocked it, took out the receipt book, made out my receipt then put the fees and the receipt book back in the suitcase and locked it up.
You don't see that kind thing in Iowa.

Hi Carl. I'd be interested to know what you were doing in Mbuji Mayi. Do you go there often? What do you think of the place? We spent 2 years there. It was a real eye opener. Please let me know if you are going back and when.
we were picking up and dropping off people there and refueling the airplane. we go there at least once a month normally. i have only overnighted there one time.
i found it a remarkable place in that is seems to have transformed itself over the years from a reasonably developed city into a great big mining camp. communities are supposed to evolve the other way round. it also had the worst roads of any town i've seen in the congo.
it had more diamond dealers/vendors than any other place i've seen. on some steets every other stall dealt in diamonds.
why am i telling you this. you already know. the main impression i had from my whole one day visit was the money pours through that town but none of it stays.
right now we don't have another trip sked but i when we do i will contact you if i know how.
